FORT HUACHUCA Ariz. - If you have heard those words in the headline recently, ‘This is NETCOM, we set the standard,’ then you most likely met the new NETCOM Command Sergeant Major, Command Sgt. Maj. Jason D. McCoy, as he assumed responsibility for all NETCOM members, during an Assumption of Responsibility Ceremony held in the command auditorium, July 7.
McCoy, the former Command Sergeant Major for the U.S. Army Information Systems Engineering Command, USAISEC, also located on Fort Huachuca, Ariz., enlisted in the Army Nov. 12, 1999, and completed Basic Training at Fort Benning, Ga., and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Gordon, Ga., where he received the Military Occupational Specialty of 25B, Information Systems Analyst.
A proven leader, McCoy is also someone who always seeks ways to improve himself and others. His military education includes the Warriors Leader’s Course, the Advanced Leader’s Course, the Total Army Instructor’s Training Course, the United States Army Drill Sergeant School, and the Senior Leader’s Course. He attended the First Sergeant Course, the Master Resiliency Trainer Course, and finally, the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, Class 65.
McCoy’s civilian education is just as impressive and includes a Master’s Degree in Information Systems from Grantham University and his pursuit of a Doctor of Philosophy in Technology and Innovation Management.
“The Command Sergeant Major position for this global command is critical for the variety of missions we have and the types of organizations we have, from the tactical all the way to the strategic,” said NETCOM Commanding General, Maj. Gen. Maria Barrett, during her remarks. “This is why we need someone of his caliber help guide NETCOM to achieve the standards that we know we are capable of doing to optimize this organization and support the Army’s pursuit of a multi-domain operations force.”
“When I am looking for a Command Sergeant Major, a battle buddy by my side, I am looking for someone who is not comfortable with where they are at, because they always endeavor to understand the environment around them,” said Barrett as she explained how this pursuit of understanding results in better informed decisions, better advice support to commanders, better advice support to Soldiers and Civilians, in this command.
“It is no secret to those that know me that I have always wanted to be in a position that I could give back to the Signal Community,” said McCoy. “I truly believe that it is a leader’s responsibility to provide the resources and motivation for a subordinates’ success. Leaders must lead from the front.”
“It is no mistake that the Army placed people as the top priority. Without you, the mission could not happen,” said McCoy. “As such, my mission is to improve those conditions, both internally and externally, that ensure continued success.” And, he added with a smile, “If I ever seem to slow down in that mission, give me five minutes and a Mountain Dew, and I will be back in the game.”
Nearing the end of his remarks, McCoy said, “In every message I send, I conclude with ‘This is NETCOM. We set the standard.’ This is more than a flashy statement, it is a challenge to everyone under our umbrella to be better and do more when working with our partners, when assisting our customers, and most importantly, when engaging with each other.”
And, as expected, the new Command Sergeant Major for NETCOM ended the ceremony with “This is NETCOM. We set the standard!”
